Documentary: From National Geographic to BBC (2015) consists of three sets of camouflaged screen behind the sculptural absurd. For the artist, the patterned screens serve as a symbolic tool for the use of anti-identification, albeit paradoxically being a fashionable icon. The sculptural assemblages in the foreground linked carved roots with various found objects together. Among them, the roots in strange shape originate from traditional Chinese root carving, which holds the idea that the artistic form follows the roots’ natural appearance. This lead Guan to speculate on the correlation between the sculpture and the nature, and has expanded to the interchangeability and the inter-objectivity between the subject and the object and towards the object and the abject—it carries out with a believe that there is a potential equivalence between all of the matters, what is needed is only the context suitable for such exchange to occur.
